Las Positas College Foundation Awards $35,000 in Grants

Las Positas College students will perform twice in the Bankhead Theater in downtown Livermore and returning United States military veterans will get the special help they need thanks to the Las Positas College Foundation.
Foundation directors approved six grants this week totaling $35,100 to support students and faculty at the Livermore campus. The Foundation raises money through events, and business and private investments to support the mission of Las Positas College.
Foundation Directors were particularly excited about the $20,000 investment for the Veterans First program.
Jeff Manchester, the foundation director who chaired the review committee said, “The committee felt very strongly that the Las Positas College Veterans First program was, in every respect, the best example of what we need to be doing to support the educational and life needs of veteran students in our community.”
“Many returning veterans feel disconnected from the mainstream. With the seed money the Foundation has granted, the program will be able to build the knowledge and support base needed to bridge the gap between the educational support needs of the veterans and the existing, but limited and complicated benefits, currently available to them,” Manchester concluded. He is a manager at Sandia National Laboratory.
The Las Positas College veterans’ program is designed to ease the transition of service personnel from the military to civilian life as a college student. The program provides assistance with educational and financial needs as well as other support. The grant will provide money for scholarships and a textbook loan program for veterans, as well as an aggressive outreach program.
“The Veterans First program started out as a dream - a realization that we as a college needed to recognize the unique needs of our veterans and provide additional services for them. The Foundation’s generous grant will allow the dream of a comprehensive program to move closer to reality,” said Sylvia Rodriguez, Dean of Students.
A $4,000 grant will allow the performing arts department to underwrite a May 2008 dance concert and a December 2008 orchestra and band concert at the new 500-seat Bankhead Theater in downtown Livermore.
“The committee saw the performances at the Bankhead Theater as an opportunity to showcase the quality of the performing arts program and exceptional work of the talented performing artists at the college,” said Manchester.
“As the community support of the arts grows, and as Las Positas looks forward to the opening of our own theater, this showcase will enable us to increase public awareness and support for this outstanding college program.”
Philip Manwell, dean of arts and communications, said, “As we await the groundbreaking of the Las Positas College Center for the Performing Arts, our students look forward to performing at the spectacular new Bankhead Theater.
“Students will have the opportunity to work in a similar-sized space and with all the ancillary facilities and technical capabilities that the Bankhead offers. The college will take the opportunity to interest and excite audiences that may never have been to a performance on the campus.”
“We are providing excellent training for future Bankhead artists. We envision a strong relationship between the two organizations,” Manwell said.
The Las Positas theater is scheduled to break ground in spring of 2008.

Three Las Positas College Programs Recognized for Excellence

The Campaign for College Opportunity has recognized Las Positas College by singling out three programs at the Livermore campus as exceptional.
In its Practices with Promise Report, the non-profit selected 15 programs across the state of California from four-year, two-year and kindergarten through 12th grade institutions, that are working to address issues of college access and success. Las Positas was the only institution recognized for more than one program and was cited three times.
“The recognition of these three exceptional programs demonstrates how our staff and faculty consistently work to put students first,” said interim President Bob Kratochvil. “Two of these programs are part of our two-year curriculum designed to help students move rapidly into the work force. The third one - the Integrated Learning Center - serves students regardless of their goals and helps them succeed.”
“The mixture of programs is typical of the Las Positas approach to help all students reach their goals, whether it’s to transfer to a four-year university, to update their skills or learn new skills to move into the work force,” Kratochvil said.
The Campaign for College Opportunity analyzed 120 programs submitted by high schools and colleges across California. It selected 15 programs to highlight the type of practices that best serve students.

The three Las Positas programs cited are:

The Design Shop: Offered through the visual communications department and instructor Fredda Cassidy, the graphics program provides real-world experience to students once they’ve completed basic courses. Using state-of-the-art technology, the class functions as a full-service design shop for both on-campus clients and those in the business and non-profit communities.
Students deal face-to-face with clients and their expectations, timelines and budgets. The experience prepares students for their chosen career, particularly since they rotate roles from designer to marketer.
The Design Shop students produced a bilingual website for Tri-Valley HELP, listing all non-profit services available in Livermore, Dublin and Pleasanton; redesigned the Livermore-Amador Symphony website in preparation for its move to the Bankhead Theater in downtown Livermore; and designed the Las Positas College Catalog which earned the Pro Award First Prize (PRO is the Community College Public Relations Organization).
Founded in 2004, the Design Shop serves an average of 50 to 60 clients per year. Clients have paid the shop an average of $20,000 the last two years.
Head Start on College: More than 600 students from Tri-Valley area high schools and the Regional Occupation Program this year received credit for units at Las Positas College for classes they took while still in high school.
Las Positas faculty and staff work with the high school instructors to ensure that the high school courses provide the curriculum equivalent to entry-level classes as Las Positas.
Once students pass the final exam, one that has content approved by Las Positas faculty and the high school teachers, the college will grant the students credit. Currently there are 20 courses offered in the high schools and the Regional Occupation Program that provide college credit as well as high school units.
Las Positas provides the units with no fee (typical fee is $20 per unit) and no residency requirement that would mandate students enroll at Las Positas College to receive the credit.
“There is a lot of research that shows if students have college credit when they graduate from high school they are much more likely to enroll in college,” said Birgitte Ryslinge the Las Positas dean who coordinates the program with the high schools.
High school students focused in certain career areas can earn as many as 15 units of credit at Las Positas through their high school career. That means one semester less at Las Positas to earn a certificate and start on a career six months earlier rather than starting at Las Positas without college credit.
Classes range in subject areas from auto mechanics to early childhood education to a variety of computer-related fields.
The Integrated Learning Center provides instructors from a variety of disciplines who come together to help students in the key areas of math, English, and non-native speakers learning English as a second language. The center involves faculty from the English, math and English as a Second Language departments all working together to serve the student.
The variety of disciplines cooperating in one center focused on helping students improve set this approach apart from that offered at other institutions of high learning.
“The Integrated Learning Center is a wonderful opportunity for students who may need extra assistance in math, English or English as a Second Language,” said Laurel Jones, vice president of academic services.
“Individualized and supplemental instruction is provided for students in an integrated learning environment where they can work with faculty on particular areas of need in these very important subject areas.
“Assistance not only helps the student do well in their courses, but also helps them to succeed in other courses throughout their educational program.”
The Integrated Learning Center has several dynamics leading to its success. The first is a student driven approach to learning where the faculty members work directly with students on a lab hour attached to a math, English or English as a Second Language course.
The second dynamic is the interdisciplinary learning that takes place in the center. Students are aware of a “hub” of academic activity going on around them and they are made to feel comfortable asking questions at any time.
Faculty members also are learning at the same time. They learn more about other disciplines and can see different teaching techniques at work.
The Integrated Learning Center serves hundreds of students each semester and is growing as the student population grows at Las Positas College.

Las Positas College Hosts Ninth Annual Major Exploration Faire

College and high school students alike will be interested in the 9th annual Major Exploration Faire on Wednesday, October 10 at Las Positas College in Livermore.
The event is designed to allow students and potential students to explore a variety of career and college major options. These range from immediate preparation for jobs in the medical field or a variety of other hands-on fields to transfer majors that will prepare students for advanced degrees.
Las Positas faculty will be on hand to discuss what major subjects will offer to students, both as transfers to four-year universities as well as job training for students looking for skills that will result in a job. A sampling of major areas that will be represented include science, art, humanities, social science, and career technical programs.
“We want to broaden students' horizons by helping them connect with a variety of people. Students are often surprised at how many different kinds of jobs they might be eligible for with a major. Some think majors lock them in to one area only,” said Nancy Wright, Las Positas counselor and coordinator of the event.
“For example, the FBI employs more people outside of the sworn FBI agents than it does as agents. There are many people who support the professional agents and that's true in many agencies and companies.”
Positions vary from trained mechanics servicing the vehicles to computer techs maintaining the computer network to the administrators supporting the officers.
Law enforcement professionals from the FBI, the county sheriff's office as well as the Livermore Pleasanton Fire Department will be present as will representatives from the California State University East Bay, San Jose State University and other colleges.
The event runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Las Positas College, located at 3000 Campus Hill Drive. Las Positas students will receive a free lunch by visiting at least two booths. High school students and potential students are welcome as well. There is no charge for the event.

Las Positas College Faculty and Classified Senates Announce New Leaders

New leaders will guide the Las Positas College faculty and classified senates for the next two years.
Math instructor Greg Daubenmire will serve as president of the College’s Faculty Senate for the next two years, while Frances DeNisco will head the Classified Senate. DeNisco coordinates the community education program for Las Positas.
As leaders of their respective senates, they will play key roles in the shared governance of the College, joining the administration in the decision-making process.
Daubenmire has taught at Las Positas since 2000 and has been a community college instructor at a variety of Bay Area colleges since 1984. He anticipates working closely with DeNisco on issues of mutual concern.
The senates deal with everything from accreditation and employee evaluation processes to office assignments and concerns about parking spaces. One key area that the faculty senate will focus on this year is analyzing a 16-week semester instead of the current 17-week schedule.
He also hopes to move forward an ethics policy for the faculty, a project he’s been working on for the last year in his role as vice president.
“If it’s truly shared governance and there’s an ethnics statement on the web site for students, the faculty ought to put one out there,” he said.
DeNisco joined Las Positas in 2001 as an adjunct instructor and then moved into her current position as community education program coordinator. As such, she coordinates the offering of more than 100 fee-based classes for the community. These range from dealing with a mid-life career change to a young learners academy for language instruction to prenatal yoga.
She’s looking to build more classified participation into the senate by making it easy for people to take part as well as rewriting the group’s bylaws. They will also be watching how appropriate staffing levels accompany the college’s major building program.
Daubenmire replaces Melissa Korber, a mass communications instructor, while DeNisco takes over for Todd Steffan, a financial aid technician.
For additional information, please contact Greg Daubenmire at gdaubenmire@laspositascollege.edu or (925) 424-1385 or Frances DiNisco at fdenisco@laspositascollege.edu or (925) 424-1467.

Classes Start Monday at Las Positas College

More than 8,000 students are expected to begin classes at Las Positas College in Livermore next week when the fall semester begins.
Las Positas offers a full-range of undergraduate-level courses designed to transfer to the University of California or the Cal State University systems. Most undergraduate transfer classes are also accepted by private four-year universities.
Students can still register this week. They can do so online at www.laspositascollege.edu or by going to the campus at 1000 Campus Hill Drive in northwest Livermore. Campus Hill Drive is reached by driving east on North Canyons Parkway.
Faculty and staff prepared for the new academic year Aug. 15 with an all-day convocation at Las Positas’ sister college, Chabot College in Hayward. New District Chancellor Joel Kinamon presided over the morning session for all district employees, while Las Positas Interim President Bob Kratochvil led the Las Positas College afternoon session.
Kratochvil, who assumed the interim presidency in July, emphasized that his tenure would be the bridge to prepare the college for new leadership. The application period for the Las Positas presidency closes Sept. 17 and those responsible for the search are hoping for a new president to start in January.
One of the highlights of the afternoon session was the telephone presentation, of the Donald R. Milanese Award for Educational Integrity and Excellence to past-president Karen Halliday. She called in from her new home in the Willamette Valley of Oregon.
During the afternoon session, Las Positas faculty and staff also were addressed by five invited guest speakers. Assemblywoman Mary Hayashi and Dublin Mayor Janet Lockhart led off the speakers and Lockhart invited Las Positas to establish a satellite facility in her community.
When Rev. Ronald Culmer, rector of St. Clare’s Episcopal Church in Pleasanton spoke, he also invited the college to consider putting classes in their new community facility when that is completed in future years.
Cal State East Bay President Dr. Mo Qayoumi said they needed to work together to improve the already good cooperation between the staffs and to recruit and development the technology, math and science students for Bay Area workforce needs, particularly from under-represented groups.
The final invited speaker, Sonnie Dae, reminded all of the staff why they do what they do. Dae came to Las Positas in 2000 as a single mother of five, living in a shelter after her 16-year marriage broke up.
She attended Las Positas College for three years and then moved on to Cal State East Bay and graduated from its blended degree/teaching certificate program. Dae had to work to maintain her composure as she looked into the audience and saw many familiar faces who had helped her through Las Positas.
She’s now starting her third year as a fifth grade teacher at Webster Academy in Oakland and kept praising the people at Las Positas who had been so important in helping her meet her goals.

Working Vineyard Planted Thursday at Las Positas College

Students and faculty director David Everett will gather early Thursday morning (Aug. 2) to start planting grapevines at Las Positas College’s new vineyard. To beat the heat, planting will start at 6 a.m. and continue into the afternoon at the vineyard located on Campus Hill Drive off North Canyons Parkway in Livermore. About 3,500 vines will be planted.
The 3-acre vineyard will become a hands-on classroom that students will use as part of Las Positas’ viticulture and winery technology program. The college offers 16 courses in this program that is designed to prepare graduates to work in the wine industry.
The three-year-old program was started to support the Livermore Valley wine industry, which has grown to 38 wineries. The wineries range from the pioneer wineries of Wente Vineyards and Concannon Vineyards that have operated for more than 120 years to wineries established in the last few years.
The local Livermore wineries have welcomed Las Positas students into their facilities to take part in a work exchange program and have donated materials as well as provided advice, said David Everett, faculty/program coordinator of viticulture and winery technology department. He’s delighted to see the vineyard installed and will lead the crew on Thursday.
“The vineyard will be a hands-on classroom where students can learn principles and disciplines and really experience a Livermore vineyard during class time,’’ Everett said.
About 60 students are currently enrolled in the viticulture program at Las Positas. Some are pursuing a track that will lead to further studies in winemaking, while others are working on the grape-growing and winery operations track.
Several varieties of grapes will be planted including Portuguese, Spanish and Rhone varietals as well as traditional grapes such as cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. The white grape plantings will be viognier, albarino and sauvignon blanc, which Everett said is like an heirloom grape here in the valley, steeped in Livermore Valley history. There will be enough vines planted of each variety to make a minimum of one barrel of wine, which will also offer valuable blending opportunities.
“This is more of a research vineyard site as opposed to production for cash flow,’’ Everett said. “We will experiment and see what works. One goal is to provide answers for valley vintners.
“Lots of people don’t have the opportunity to do trials and experiments and see what works. In the name of education, we don’t have to worry about failing. Failing can give as many good answers as succeeding,’’ he said.
Once the vines are mature and producing, plans call for the enology department to make wine. Eventually, the college plans to sell both grapes and bottled wine.
Napa Community College has just received its bonding approval from the state and now can sell its wine at retail. There are also wine programs at Santa Rosa and Modesto community colleges.
To reach the vineyard site, please take North Canyons Parkway east to Campus Hill Drive. Turn left, drive to the top of the hill and the vineyard will be on the left.
For further information, please contact David Everett, faculty/program coordinator of viticulture and winery technology department, (925) 285-3954 cell or deverett@laspositascollege.edu

Las Positas College Student Admitted to Stanford University

South African native Mbali Mphande will attend Stanford University this fall after receiving a full scholarship to the prestigious private university.
Mbali will major in international relations and psychology and add another chapter to her amazing story.
She’s one of six children who grew up living in poverty in the black township of Soweto in Johannesburg, South Africa. During her childhood, the South African system of Apartheid was abolished and blacks took control of their country for the first time since colonization. The country still struggles with clashes between whites and blacks, poverty and disease.
Mbali came to the United States in 2005 to pursue an education thanks to her oldest sister, Mulenga.
“She sacrificed a lot to get me here,” Mphande said. Her sister paid for her visa, the required immunizations and helped her search American colleges. She ruled out colleges on the East Coast because of the weather - she was not interested in snow - and Las Positas College in Livermore was one that responded positively to the emailed inquiry.
Her sister, a pediatrician with two children of her own, continued to support Mbali once she arrived in California. That support allowed her to share an apartment in Livermore and attend Las Positas College.
She knew no English when she arrived, but she spoke 13 other languages. Being immersed in a new country with a new language was not the hurdle for her that it likely would have been for others.
“I volunteered a lot with children. I helped out at Valley View Elementary School in Pleasanton. The kids readily corrected me if I mis-spoke,” she said.
In May 2006, Mbali received a phone call from her brother, informing her that her benefactor sister had died after suffering from severe Meningitis, which left her in coma for almost two weeks.
Her oldest sister was Mbali’s third sibling to die. One sister died of complications from ulcers, which could have been controlled by over-the-counter antacids.
One of her brothers was shot to death while joining college students in a protest about the government forcing them to learn in Afrikaans language. He was one of 600 black students killed in that protest.
Mbali has experienced much tragedy in her short life, yet she’s focused on the opportunity that lies ahead and strengthened by her faith in God and the new family she’s found at Las Positas College.
“I’d like to express my gratitude to the whole school and to all my friends in the Tri-Valley that really helped me.
I wouldn’t be here if they hadn’t reached out and looked after me. It’s my big family away from home,” she said.
With no support from home, Mbali could no longer afford the apartment rent. Las Positas College Vice President Pam Luster and admissions staff members, Sylvia Rodriguez and Janice Cantua, arranged for her to stay with music professor Jim Heiner at his Pleasanton home.
“Las Positas College gave me a chance to continue my education. It will always be my home,” Mphande said.
“My special thanks go to the LPC international students office that always checked on me and made sure that everything in every area of my life was alright during my course of study,” she added.
“Mbali is an exceptional young woman. She is intelligent, caring and empathetic. She embodies all of the qualities of individuals who should serve in our global community as leaders,” said Pam Luster, who heads student services for Las Positas College.
Mbali had dreamed of attending the University of California, Berkeley, but found that scholarships weren’t available to international students. So she narrowed her search to private universities in the Bay Area, planning to apply to Stanford, Santa Clara, St. Mary’s and Mills College.
She only had enough cash to afford one application fee so she applied to Stanford and battled through what she described as a “demanding application process.” She later learned that she’d received a scholarship covering tuition, room and board.
After completing her education she hopes to work for the United Nations and focus on developing countries, whether in Africa or elsewhere.
Las Positas College is committed to diversifying its student body with international students. It provides comprehensive services for international students including: assistance with visas, housing, and support services. The college provides cultural opportunities for students to enjoy their stay in the Bay Area.

Las Postias College Student Excels

(Livermore, CA) - When she graduates from Las Positas College Saturday, Loretta “Lori” Myers will take with her great memories as well as highest honors.
Lori, a Pleasanton resident, received two particularly notable honors. She is the first Las Positas College student to receive a Jack Kent Cooke Foundation scholarship, just one of 51 awards given nationally to students moving from two-year colleges to universities. The scholarship provides for up to $30,000 per year to the university of the recipient’s choice.
In addition, she was selected as the top California student by Alpha Gamma Sigma, the honor society for community colleges.
She plans to attend Berkeley in the fall to pursue a degree in psychology and then attend medical school.
Lori is the first member of her family to attend college and has had both an unusual and challenging life. Raised by her single mom, Frenesi, she started ballet lessons when she was four years old.
A gifted dancer, she moved onto the San Francisco Ballet Company’s Academy planning to make ballet her career. She attended the academy throughout her high school years, graduating from Foothill High School through an independent study program.
Meanwhile, her mother, her aunt and Lori were caring for her grandmother at home as she dealt with serious health issues.
After graduating from high school, she decided that a career in ballet wasn’t what she wanted for her life. Instead, she decided to pursue an education and become a doctor. She’s been volunteering at San Ramon Regional Medical Center and cited surgeons there as being helpful as she moved forward.
Because of her unusual high school studies, she had many college preparatory classes to complete to get on track. She spent two years at Ohlone College in Fremont before hearing friends say she should try Las Positas College.
“It was like day and night. I love this school. It’s good academically and they really want to help students and make sure they reach their full potential,” she said.
She got deeply involved in a variety of clubs and activities as well as pursuing the classes necessary for transfer to Cal or another top-tier university.
Among her club activities at Las Positas are: honors transfer program; Alpha Gamma Sigma honors society, membership officer; founder and president of the Las Positas Environmental Club; founder and president of Mu Alpha Theta, the math honors society; president of the Math Club; Psychology Club; Psi Beta, the psychology honors society; Senator in the student government.
That involvement showed when Las Positas held its annual awards ceremony. She garnered 13 different awards, not including the Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship or the state Alpha Gamma Sigma Awards.
Looking back at her year at Las Positas, she had nothing but praise for Randy Taylor, a professor and faculty advisor to the student honor society.
She said he was simply “amazing.”

A covered outdoor mall connects five of the rooms. The patio on the westside of the building includes a fire pit and gathering spaces for students and faculty.
Sierra Bay Contractors, Inc. is the general contractor on the $14.8 million project. It’s the second major facility to be completed on the Las Positas campus after 59 percent of voters approved the $498 million bond measure for both Chabot and Las Positas in March 2004.
Completion of the $12.6 million gymnasium and physical education facilities last year allowed Las Positas to field intercollegiate men’s and women’s basketball for the first time this year.

Design and planning for the build-out of the Las Positas campus is continuing. By 2011, the following projects are planned for completion (all budget estimates are for construction):

Las Positas College Spanish Department Presents Two Cultural Events in March

(Livermore, CA) - The Las Positas College (LPC) Spanish Department will host two fascinating cultural events during the month of March. The first event, is slated for Thursday, March 22, features a lecture by Dr. Zachary Hruby of the Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Riverside.
Dr. Hruby, one of the foremost experts on Maya culture, will discuss “Mel Gibson's Apocalypto vs. the Archaeological Record: An Investigation of Ancient Maya Ritual and Sacrifice”. Gibson's recent film, a quasi-historical depiction of the Maya at the time of the Spanish Contact, has been widely criticized for its inaccurate and biased depiction of the Maya of Central America (Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, and El Salvador). Las Positas College Bound Scholars Program Kicks Off Innovative Program to Help Middle School Students Attend College

(Livermore, CA) - Las Positas College and the Las Positas College Foundation announce the creation of the College Bound Scholars (CBS) Program for middle school students. Working together with local K-12 districts, the program targets select middle school students from the Tri-Valley region and pairs them with college and community mentors who will guide them into post-secondary education.
The project is funded by the Las Positas College Foundation through a grant underwritten by a generous donation from the Foresters Court #77 of Livermore, an organization that attributes its roots to Robin Hood and the Ancient Order of Foresters in England and is committed to community services and philanthropic endeavors. Additional funding from Sandia National Labs supports activities and materials for the program.
The mission of the College Bound Scholars program is to increase the number of first generation college students enrolling in higher education, specifically Las Positas College. The program will match public middle school students from Dublin, Pleasanton, and Livermore with community mentors who will support and encourage them. A $1,000 scholarship is invested in the name of each participant at the beginning of the six year term of the program from 6th grade to college. Upon successful completion of the program each student will receive the invested funds, plus interest, as they transition out of the program and into college.
“We are excited to have the opportunity to reach out to middle school students in the Tri-Valley and help them prepare for college,” said Pam Luster, vice president of student services at Las Positas College. “Our community benefactors have been very generous in supporting this program and I believe that speaks to our community’s commitment to higher education.”
In the first phase of the program, K-12 school districts in Dublin, Pleasanton and Livermore will identify a total of 30 sixth graders using several criteria including socioeconomic need, first generation in family to attend college, potential to succeed in college, and residency. Following the selection process, mentors will be matched with students and the program will commence.
In April, the college is sponsoring a “Meet Your Mentor” Awards Night. CBS students and their parents will meet their mentors, and LPC students will work with the CBS students to participate in college activities, tours and awards.

Las Positas College Award Winning Newspaper “Express” Now a Weekly Publication

(Livermore, CA) - Las Positas College (LPC) is pleased to announce that the student-produced newspaper “Express” is now being published on a weekly basis. The change took place at the beginning of the spring semester and steps up production from bi-monthly to weekly.
Readers can look for the student newspaper most Fridays that school is in session. The Express regularly garners awards in General Excellence and for individual reporting from the Journalism Association of Community Colleges. The Express, now in its 18th year of publication, was started under the direction of Dr. Abby McCann, who still teaches at Las Positas College.
The move to take the Express to a weekly publication was spearheaded by the new Editor-In-Chief, Lauren Barnard, and the ongoing production editor, Jeff Bennett. Student journalists on the Express staff expect that with a weekly schedule, they will be able to keep the student body apprised in a timelier manner about topics such as school sports, Associated Students of Las Positas College (ASLPC) activities, campus news and entertainment.
The online version of the Express can be viewed at www.lpcexpress.org through College Publisher, the largest interactive network of online college newspapers in the nation. The parent company of College Publisher, Y2M, was recently purchased by MTV Networks, adding more clout to the youth-market appeal of the company, which now adds Internet to its information resources. A study conducted by Y2M reveals that 77% of college students surveyed read the print edition of their campus paper at least once per month and 57% read it online.*

Las Positas Student Named All-American
38-Year-Old Marcia Tafarel is First All-American in Women's Sports at College

(Livermore, CA) – The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) has named Marcia Tafarel as a First Team All-American player. The designation marks the first time in the 16-year history of women's intercollegiate sports at Las Positas College (LPC) that a woman has received the honor of First Team All-American. The NSCAA awards the highest honors for all players, student/athletes and coaches at every level in the game of soccer, from World Cup Qualifying of national teams to coaching licensing schools.
Tafarel, or “Tafa” as she is commonly known, was presented the award on January 13 in Indianapolis, Indiana at the Annual NSCAA Awards Banquet Luncheon during the National Convention. Her All-American pin, team picture and NSCAS certificate are on display in the women's trophy case of the new physical education complex at LPC.
Tafa was also the Most Valuable Player for the LPC Lady Hawks, Player of the Year for the Coast Conference, First Team Nor/Cal State Team, and the Western Region Mid-Fielder of the Year. The string of honors bear even more weight when you consider that Tafa is 38-years old, a Brazilian national who moved to the United States just two years ago to attend school and learn English. Tafa didn't even play on an organized women's team until she was 14.
“Soccer is very, very big in Brazil, but there were no competitive teams organized for young girls, just for boys,” says Tafa. “I began playing as a child with my brothers and neighbors, kicking the ball in the street.”
Tafa came to the United States in 2004 believing she had retired from playing soccer, just looking to play for fun and perhaps secure a coaching job .In addition to maintaining a 4.0 grade point average in her classes at Las Positas, Tafa has realized her dream of staying in the game she loves so much, and plays and coaches soccer in the region.
