Las Positas College Presents Two Free Career Workshops

(Livermore, CA) - Las Positas College (LPC) will host two informative workshops aimed at highlighting careers in both health and engineering in the coming weeks. The first workshop, slated for Tuesday, September 30 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., is entitled "What Can I do With a Major in Health Science Fields?" The workshop will take place in the Staff Lounge of Building 1600 at LPC and parking is $2. Both events are free and open to the public. Five presenters from various areas of the health field will discuss the skills needed to work in a health career, what types of jobs are in demand and how that demand is expected to accelerate in the coming years. The United States spends about 11 percent of its gross national product, over $500 billion, each year on health care in a system that requires highly trained workers. Almost seven million people currently work in the health care field and economists expect long-term job growth in this industry to be higher than average in the next decade or so. On Thursday, October 9, the Career/Transfer Center and the LPC Engineering Department will present a workshop entitled "What Can I do With a Major in Engineering?" The event takes place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Staff Lounge of Building 1600. Speakers from the industry and representatives from four-year universities will address educational and career paths for those interested in entering the engineering field. Las Positas College Garners Educational Technology Award

(Livermore, CA) - For the fourth consecutive year, Las Positas College (LPC) has been named as one of six recipients of the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office Technology Focus Award. The awards, jointly sponsored by the Chancellor's Office and the Foundation for California Community Colleges, highlight programs and staff whose contributions have helped the community colleges to keep their campus operations and educational programs in step with the technology revolution. The Teaching and Learning Initiatives Web Accessibility program was the focus of the prestigious award. The program involved training a cadre of Visual Communications students on the technical aspects of making web sites accessible. Students then collaborated with instructors to make sites compliant to Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, which requires that Federal agencies' electronic and information technology is accessible to people with disabilities. The project encouraged faculty, staff and students to share technical knowledge to work effectively and also increased awareness within the college regarding the need for accessibility in all instructional web sites. Planning for the project began in October 2002, with additional training conducted in January, and students had the remainder of the Spring 2003 semester to redesign the web sites. Once the students completed the sites, the college webmaster confirmed compliance and authorized the re-posting of the sites. Student participants on the project included Joanne Berven, Michael Boyda, Jared Cunningham, Kristin Chapman, Lailay Faizyar, Brent Gallant, Stephen Hilton, Anthony Keel, Ayesha Mazhan, Svetlana Mazarov, Ryan Purves, Soha Saleh and Paolo Milana. The faculty leaders were Juliette Bryson, Eric Harpell, Marilyn Marquis, Jane McCoy, Cynthia Ross, Barbara Zingg, Ernest Jones and Jeanne Virgilio. The project team also included Ralph Kindred, Dean, Division V; Elizabeth Noyes, Webmaster; Amber Sexton, Alternative Media Technology Specialist; Fredda Cassidy, Faculty, Visual Communications; Michael Jay, Faculty, Visual Communications and Scott Vigallon, Instructional Technology/Open Learning Coordinator. Kindred, Vigallon and Noyes accepted the award at the September 8 Board of Governor's meeting held in Sacramento. Prior LPC winning efforts were for design, development and training of faculty in the AA Online Degree -more- Program at LPC (2002); design and development of the Professional Development Center Online web site (2001) and design, development and faculty training in the Title III Core Group Instructional Web Site Development Program (2000).

(Livermore, CA) - Forced by the state to cancel its concurrent enrollment program for high schools students for summer, Las Positas College will once again offer the program in Fall 2003. "In light of the budget cuts and the State's investigation into concurrent enrollment we took time to re-examine our program. Concurrent enrollment helps the parents, students and high schools of the Tri-Valley to bridge gaps in terms of advanced scholastic work towards the students' educational goals. We are committed to serving our community despite the budget crisis so we are reinstating the program for Fall," said Ms. Pamela Luster, Vice President of Student Services. Las Positas College's concurrent enrollment program provides the opportunity for high school students to enroll in college-level courses. High school juniors and seniors who wish to participate in concurrent enrollment must be recommended by their high school principal and have written parental permission. Further information on the Concurrent Enrollment policy is available at Tri-Valley high schools or on the web at http://www.clpccd.com/lpc/admissions/concurrent.htm Due to the Governor's withholding of funds for the program, Las Positas College is not able to offer concurrent enrollment in Summer 2003. The Fall parameters have also been adjusted to accommodate those students who most closely meet the Education Code guidelines for concurrent enrollment. The application deadline for the concurrent enrollment program for the fall semester is June 12, 2003. (No exceptions will be made).
