Las Positas Computer Students Give Back to Community
(Livermore, CA) - A $10,000 grant to Las Positas College has been applied
to a program that will enable students to learn, while giving. The grant to
the school's LaPTechS work-based learning program, was awarded by the Tri-Valley
Community Fund. With it students trained in computer repair and business administration,
along with a faculty mentor, are providing technical and business support
to both the Tri-Valley One-Stop Career Center and the Tri-Valley Haven shelter.
Leslie Gravino, the Work Base Learning Coordinator at Las Positas wrote the
grant which covers the cost of a faculty mentor and stipends for up to twenty
students for one year. "This grant provides students with more
texture to their work experience by exposing them to the culture of not-for-profit
agencies that are making a difference in our own community,” she said. "Through
it, they learn that there are many different work environments that need computer
support that are outside of the traditional business office setting,"
she added.
LaPTechS, which stands for "Las Positas Technical Support", began
as an innovative entrepreneurial venture at the college in 1999. Since
then, the now self-sustaining program has provided dozens of students with
hands-on, real-life job experience as computer technicians. Through
the program students install hardware and software, provide assessments and
troubleshooting expertise, handle equipment repairs and maintenance and offer
user support for clients. In addition to serving as the computer Help
Desk for the Las Positas campus, the program also lists the Dublin, Pleasanton
and Livermore Unified School Districts on its client list.

Las Positas College to Re-open Search for President, Vice President Named Interim President
(Livermore, CA) – Las Positas College in Livermore will re-open its search
for a president beginning early next year.
At the Board of Trustees latest meeting, Chancellor Susan Cota recommended
to board members that the college re-open the position and launch a second
national search for a president for the college which enrolls almost 7,800
students.
This announcement comes after a national search yielded an applicant pool
of more than 30 prospective candidates. Three finalists interviewed with the
Chancellor and spoke at public forums held at the colleges.
Dr. Lois Callahan of Professional Personnel Leasing has been serving as interim
president for the past six months since Dr. Cota was named District Chancellor.
Dr. Callahan will step down as interim president to conduct the national search.
Karen Halliday, vice president of student services at the college, has been
named interim president.
“Dr. Callahan has worked to create a seamless transition for the college.
Her skills as a former president and chancellor have helped lead the faculty
and staff through the final phases of strategic planning in addition to many
other projects. While she has been an excellent interim president, I feel
the college and district need her skills more now as a presidential search
consultant. Dr. Callahan has led many successful presidential searches and
she is excited to continue working with Las Positas College in this capacity,”
said Chancellor Cota.
Mrs. Halliday will step into the interim president position on January 22,
2002. She has served as vice president of student services at the College
since 1994 where she has been responsible for counseling, admissions, special
programs and all aspects of student services. Prior to joining Las Positas
College, Mrs. Halliday served in the California Community Colleges State Chancellor's
Office as dean of student services, statewide matriculation coordinator, and
as a specialist in the office of disabled students programs and services.
She has also served as a faculty and staff member at De Anza College in Cupertino.
Mrs. Halliday received her master's degree in education at Purdue University,
and her bachelor's degree at UC Santa Barbara.
She is an active member of the Livermore Rotary, the Tri-Valley Educational
Collaborative, and the Tri-Valley Business Council.
The college expects to have a permanent president in place by June 1, 2002.
